National Premmie Day 2008

Think Twins – proud sponsors of the National Premmie Foundation

As sponsors of the National Premmie Foundation, we invite all our customers to embrace National Premmie Day, today - Friday, 25th July.

During the past few months, many Think Twins customers kindly donated 5% of their order to the National Premmie Foundation, together raising well over $200 for the Foundation.

This month, there are events being held all over Australia to raise money for the National Premmie Foundation, and we encourage everyone to attend and support their great work. National Premmie Day is the day to celebrate with our premature or seriously ill infants as well as remember those special babies who did not survive their journey.

The National Premmie Foundation invites parents of premature and sick newborns to hold a National Premmie Day event in their local community. Support and information for families, carers and health professionals is available at www.prembaby.org.au or by calling 1300 PREMBABY (1300 773 622).

Twins and Prematurity

At how many weeks were your twins born? It's one of the first questions people ask about twins. Prematurity is a risk that a majority of multiples face, and the consequences of an early birth vary from miniscule to life-threatening. Research in the US estimates that more than 50% of twins, 90% of triplets and virtually all quadruplets and higher order multiples are born preterm, or before the 37th week of pregnancy. The earlier the birth, the greater the risk of complications for the babies.

While advances in medical technology have greatly improved the outlook for premature infants, the number of premature births has also increased, making prematurity the leading cause of infant death and developmental delays in industrialized countries. Each year approximately 42,000 newborns are admitted to Special and Intensive Care Nurseries across Australia, and many of these are twins.

Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV)

The day coincides with Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) season, a common virus that causes cold like symptoms. For prematurely born and seriously ill infants, RSV is a serious health threat often resulting in re hospitalisation or forced isolation to families. By the age of 2 all children will have been infected with RSV at least once and we want to make parents aware of the signs and symptoms of RSV.
