Steve and Mark Waugh are Australian fraternal twin brothers, born 2nd June 1965 in Canterbury NSW. Steve is the older brother by a couple of minutes. Both have represented Australia in cricket and have achieved awards and accolades on and off the field. Steve Waugh made his first class cricket debut for NSW in the 1984-85 Sheffield Shield season. He made his test debut against India in 1985-86 season when he was 20 years old and he was classed as an all rounder and was a fairly consistent part of the team until poor form found him dropped for the fourth test in the 1990-91 Ashes series where he was replaced by his twin brother Mark who scored a century on his debut. As the captain of the 1998-99 team he led Australia to a record breaking 16 successive test victories. Then poor form hit him again and he was dropped again a couple of years later, but he continued on and as the test captain Steve and the team won another Ashes series in 2002-2003. Off the field Steve wrote several books diarising many of the tours undertaken whilst being a part of the Australian cricket team which became ‘must reads’ for cricket enthusiasts. He also is known for his charity work, particularly in India. He established a leper children's colony, ‘Udayan’, in Calcutta. He has also set up the Steve Waugh foundation which helps children aged from 0-25 who do not fall into any category of illness or set criteria, these children miss out on government funding and support and this is where the foundation can financially help these families. Steve was awarded the Australian of the Year in 2004 not only for his cricketing abilities and leadership but more for his charity work with children both in Australia and overseas. Steve married his childhood sweetheart Lynette and had 3 children Rosie, Austin and lily. Mark Waugh made his first class debut for NSW as an opening bowler, he then became recognised as an all-rounder but was overlooked for national team selection in favour of his twin brother Steve Waugh. In the late 80’s there were calls for him to be selected for the national team and finally made his debut in the 4th test of 1990-91 Ashes series ironically replacing his brother who had been dropped, and made a century on debut. In the following tour of the West Indies, the brothers played test cricket together for the first time in the third test played in Trinidad. Mark retired from International cricket in 2002 and he held the record for most catches taken by a non wicket keeping player of 181 catches, he also held the record for most runs in One Day Internationals, beating Allan Border’s record in 1999. This record stood until it was beaten by Ricky Ponting in 2005. In 2005 Waugh was acknowledged for his services to cricket when he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM). He now works as a sports journalist for the Sydney Morning Herald, and has also worked for Fox Sports, Channel Seven show Sportsworld and as a Tour Guide for Australian Sports Tours. He was married on April 9, 2005 to Sydney Cup-winning thoroughbred trainer Kim Moore.
